Referment is working with the European subsidiary of a UK-based insurtech that provides a digital platform enabling automotive brands to deliver embedded, data-driven insurance. The subsidiary is a rapidly growing European Managing General Agent on an expansion journey, and is seeking a Financial Accountant / Versicherungsbuchhalter to join its team, based in either its Munich or London office on a hybrid basis. This is far more than standard day-to-day accounting. You will take ownership of the finance and accounting function for the German entity, acting as the key driver of local financial operations. While partnering closely with the UK-based Group Finance team, you will have the autonomy to shape local processes, establish robust controls and guide the development of the function as the business scales across the EU. The Role

  • Own the month-end process, cash flow management and financial reporting for the German subsidiary under German GAAP (HGB), coordinating monthly group reporting with the UK parent entity
  • Manage insurer payments and the end-to-end bordereaux process, working with the data and Group Finance teams
  • Partner with external advisors on local tax compliance (VAT, corporation tax, transfer pricing) and coordinate local German payroll
  • Oversee day-to-day finance operations, including supplier payments, invoice postings, employee expenses and cash flow forecasting
  • Maintain strong financial controls and provide key support and evidence for insurer and statutory audits
  • Prepare and monitor financial KPIs and management information to help guide commercial decisions

What We're Looking For

  • A degree or professional qualification in finance, accounting or a related discipline
  • Solid experience within an MGA, insurance broker, intermediary or insurer, with a strong grasp of bordereaux, premium collections, insurer payments and premium reconciliations
  • Proven experience with German GAAP (HGB) accounting requirements and statutory reporting
  • A track record of maintaining robust financial controls and managing cash flow within a high-performing finance function
  • Advanced Excel and strong systems skills, with a knack for analysing data and improving reporting processes
  • Professional German (essential for local financial statements and HGB compliance) and fluent English, the group working language
  • The ability to work independently as the sole local finance representative

Desirable extras include experience in a fast-growing start-up or scale-up, sole-representative finance responsibility, familiarity with regulated insurance reporting, German VAT/corporate tax/transfer pricing knowledge, and a passion for finance technology or SQL. This could suit a hands-on, technically strong qualified accountant who thrives in a collaborative, fast-paced environment and wants direct impact on a growing European business.
